Sav-A-Life is implementing the Abstinence-Based Sex Education curriculum of "Choosing the Best" into some local schools. This curriculum helps teens reduce sexual behavior through:
* Clear communication of the physical and emotional risks of being sexually active.
* Small group directed discussions that encourage abstinence and lead to real changes in attitudes and actions.
* Self-esteem building exercises that help teens value who they are, the choices they make and their ability to resist peer pressures.
* Structured interaction with parents/guardians that opens communication and encourages positive parental influence.
This curriculum, "Choosing the Best" was developed by a group of medical, mental health and training experts. In 1997 results from the pilot study of 1,000 eighth grade Georgia students were released by the Georgia Institute of Technology. The study found that the "Choosing the Best" program is effective in bringing about positive attitudinal change toward abstinence, even with the high risk sexually active group.
